Bagdale Hall Hotel, Whitby

Events at Bagdale Hall

Five hundred years of Whitby hospitality. One very good party.

Bagdale Hall was built in 1516 for the Conyers family, back when the land around it was open fields running down to Bagdale Beck. Five centuries on, it’s still here — oak beams, stone mullioned windows, deep fireplaces and a staircase with a story or two — right in the middle of Whitby, a few minutes from the harbour, the beach and the abbey.

It isn’t a converted barn or a hotel function suite. It’s a house. That makes it a very particular kind of place to hold a wedding, a big birthday or a family get-together: everyone in one building, no signage pointing you to Conference Room B, no coach party arriving at the same time as you.

If you’re looking for somewhere in Whitby that feels like it belongs to you for the day, we’d love to hear from you.

Weddings
Your special day, our amazing venue

Whitby has been drawing people to the coast for a very long time, and there are worse places to begin a marriage than a town of cobbled streets, fishing boats and an abbey on the cliff.

At Bagdale we keep weddings small and personal by design. That size suits couples who want to actually talk to everyone they’ve invited.

How we work with our happy couples:

  • We’ll take the time to work out what you actually want, rather than which package you fit into
  • Our talented team will cook your wedding breakfast in our own kitchen, using local suppliers we’ve worked with for years
  • Friendly front of house staff will look after your guests
  • We provide exclusive use of the Old Hall for your special celebration

Stay the night

We offer comfortable and spacious en-suite bedrooms across three historic buildings — the Old Hall, Crab Hall and Lobster Hall — all within a stone’s throw of each other. Several have four-poster beds and the kind of period detail that photographs rather well the morning after.

That means your guests can walk upstairs at the end of the night, and you can carry on over breakfast.

There’s free parking on site, and Whitby station is a five-minute walk for anyone coming by train or on the moors railway.

The Perfect Venue For
Family Celebrations

We host milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries, christening lunches, retirement dos, engagement parties and family reunions — the sort of occasion where three generations turn up and half of them haven’t seen each other since the last one.

We’re also glad to host funeral teas and celebrations of life. If you’re arranging one, ring us and we’ll take as much of it off your hands as we can.

Whatever the occasion, you get the same thing: a warm room, food cooked on site, and staff who’ve done this often enough to let you enjoy your own party.

Why Whitby

The harbour, the beach at Sandsend, the 199 steps, the abbey on the headland, the moors behind. Your photographer will have a good day out, and so will anyone who arrives early or stays on for the weekend.

We’re in the centre of town, so guests can walk to everything — no shuttle buses, no taxi rank at midnight, no one stranded up a country lane.
